The elevated metro or BTS (SkyTrain) consists of three lines covering the total distance of 38 km and 35 stations: 22 at the Sukhumbit Line, 12 at the Si Lom line and 6 at the Airport City Line. The underground part of Bangkok’s metro, MRT, consists of two line covering the distance of 45 km and 41 stations.
The BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit System) skytrain began operations on December 5, 1999 and has two lines covering the central business districts and further afield. Operating up above the crazy Bangkok traffic snarls and pollution, Skytrain runs regularly from 6am until midnight. Tickets are dispensed from ticket vending machines at all stations (if you have the correct change), alternatively ticket booths are staffed during operating hours (see below)

Do your research before you go! Google maps can help you to locate your hotel, and it's proximity to attractions, transport (BTS and MRT) and other significant places in the area.
BTS (Skytrain)
An elevated railway system that covers the major tourist areas. Not a 24/7 service, the first trains in the morning start at 06:00 and last trains depart just after midnight. When stations are closed, the ticket machines are turned off and the station and train platforms are not accessible. Fares are based on the number of stops (or stations) you will pass and start at 15฿ and top out at 52฿ for a one-way journey. For the average working class Thai, the BTS fares tend to be viewed as 'expensive' as compared to other forms of transportation such as the non air-conditioned public buses which have fares that start at only 4฿ for a one-way journey!
MRT (Subway)
Newly opened underground train service that is complementary (but separate) to the BTS-Skytrain service and intersects the BTS at two 'transit' points. Designed more for the residential/commuter passenger. One way fares on the MRT start at 16฿ up to 41฿. Many MRT stations have either free or low-priced dedicated 'Park & Ride' lots for working commuters to park their vehicles before riding the MRT into town.
